Deposed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein was executed today by hanging about 6 a.m. Baghdad time. In a farewell message to Iraqis, posted Wednesday on the Internet, Saddam said he was giving his life for his country as part of the struggle against the U.S.
Iraq's death penalty was suspended by the U.S. military in 2003, but the new Iraqi government reinstated it two years later, saying executions would deter criminals. I must say, I am totally against death penalty in general. Why not to put people into prison? I also read that some mosque preacher in the Shiite holy city of Najaf called Saddam's execution “God's gift to Iraqis”. What kind of preacher or any believer would say something like that? I just don’t understand. Some people really have nerves - they turned our religions into something very inhuman. During our not so bright history, many people have been executed “in the name of God”. The truth is they have been executed in the name of the people in charge. God has nothing to do with it. Unfortunately anyone can interpret God’s will in his own ways. Ain’t that convenient?! Don’t get me wrong, I know Saddam is most likely guilty by all charges, but that doesn’t affect my opinion about death penalty.
I feel so down at this moment. The current situation in the world worries me big time! Death penalties, wars, pollutions... I have to post something brighter.
